The television camera shadowed Petr Cech all the way to the edge of the six-yard box even during the coin toss that sent him trotting to the other end of the Wembley pitch.

Regardless of what happened next, Cech always knew he was going to take centre-stage from the moment he realised his official debut for Arsenal would come against his old club Chelsea here in the Community Shield.

On his way across the halfway line, the 33-year-old jogged impassively past his old team-mates, breaking off only to hold out a gloved hand as he crossed paths with Thibaut Courtois, the young man whose prodigious talent hastened Cech’s departure from Stamford Bridge after 11 years.
